The IF101 model chips will help to meet demand for a large number ofCMMB terminals in the lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games,Innofidei said.
China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) iscurrently building CMMB trial networks in 37 Chinese cities, and aims tokick off CMMB operations before next year's Olympic Games.
Over the next six months, TSMC will manufacture millions of IF101 chipswith 12-inch wafer technologies, the announcement said.
The chip to be manufactured is an optimized version of the model released in March this year. Compared to the previous model, the optimized chip consumes less power, has higher sensitivity and enables greater mobility, which in turn will improve terminal stand-by times and reception performance, Innofidei said.
CMMB is a mobile TV standard developed by SARFT's Academy of Broadcasting Science and has won strong support from the central government. China has independent intellectual property rights to the
technology.
Innofidei is a partner of approximately 50 terminal manufacturers, such as Lenovo, Aigo, TechFaith Wireless, UTStarcom, ZTE and Motorola. Established in 1987, TSMC is the world's largest dedicated semiconductor foundry.
